The term karate was originally defined as “china-hand”. The
Japanese further refined it to mean “empty hand”. It is the art of
self-defense employing kicks, punches, strikes, and blocks. The
four basic components of a karate class include drills or basics,
katas or forms, kumite or sparring and self defense. The individual
instructor may choose to add to the curriculum including the use
of weapons.

Isshinryu karate was developed by Tatsuo Shimabuku in the mid-
Twentieth Century. It translates as “One heart way” and is a
hybrid of earlier systems of karate, a form of martial arts which
originated from the island of Okinawa.

Karate itself was developed by the Okinawans to defend themselves
against the Japanese who imposed a weapons ban after invading
the tiny island during the 15 th Century. The original system of
karate on the island was Okinawa Te, or simply Te meaning hand.
The sole purpose of karate was to defend against an armed and
armored opponent.

Karate was practiced secretly for centuries until 1917, when an
Okinawan school teacher named Funikoshi introduced it to Japan .

Isshinryu originated from a synthesis of two earlier styles,
Shorinryu and Gojuryu. Shimabuku did away with many of the
irrelevant aspects of the art such as very low stances and flowery
techniques. By fighting more upright, the Isshinryu system became
an extremely efficient self defense system.

Isshinryu also stresses the use of kata, exercises used to help the
student develop the connection between the mind, body and
breath, the three main components of a technique.

Isshinryu karate is an Okinawan style. It is a hybrid of Shorinryu
and Gojuryu. The founder was Tatsuo Shimabuku who combined
the most useful and practical moves of those styles, molding them
into Isshinryu. It was more suited he thought to the United States
Marines that he trained on the island in the mid 20 th Century.
These Marines brought home what they had learned and started
Isshinryu in various areas of the United States of America . Upper
East Tennessee has a strong Isshinryu base with many well
established dojos or schools.

Double Dragon Dojo was established in July of 2003.
